Youth Services Librarian
Summary of job responsibilities
Serves as library representative to the community concerning services for minors. Works to provide library services to children and young adults; including reference, reader’s advisory, programming, community activities, and collection development; general duties at the circulation desk and shelving of children’s collection. Works with staff to monitor and evaluate services to youth; promotes and publicizes the youth services programs in the schools and the community. Some weekend and evening hours are required and additional hours as necessary to meet the needs of library operation. This is a full-time position.
Job duties
Book selection, collection development, children and youth program planning and implementation along with readers’ advisory. Promotes youth events by speaking to schools, organizations, etc., and sending notices to the news media. Plans, organizes and directs the summer reading program according to the requirements of the Indiana State Library. Maintains children’s room in a clean and orderly fashion by developing displays, bulletin boards, shelving and shelf reading collections, and other organizing tasks. Provides service to parents and maintains parent and teacher library collection. Provides service at the circulation desk as needed including prepares library for opening/closing; checks materials in and out using computer terminal; greets and directs patrons to various locations or locates materials; answers the phone; registers new patrons on the library computer system; uses a computer terminal to provide information to the public or explains how to use the library’s computer system; receives and resolves complaints or refers the public to a director; collects and records fines and fees; assists supervisors with special projects; assists patrons in the computer lab as needed. Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum qualifications
At least three years of supervised experience with young minors (middle school or younger) is recommended. College degree preferred. Candidate must meet State Certification requirements and additional education may be required. Applicants are subject to a criminal background check.
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
